The Ingenious Trick Revealed: How a Funny Scene in ‘Prisoner of the Caucasus’ Was Filmed

The solution turned out to be easier than everyone thought.

The comedy “Prisoner of the Caucasus, or Shurik’s New Adventures” came out in the mid-60s of the last century. Despite the fact that the special effects at that time were much less developed than they are today, some scenes still amaze the audience.

So, in one of the scenes, the hero of Yuri Nikulin lies under a blanket, sticks out his hand and begins to scratch his foot. The comic effect of the scene is that the hero’s legs are straightened, that is, he cannot reach his own heel.

Who came up with the idea for this funny scene is still a mystery. Many argue that Nikulin himself invented it: he improvised more than once during the filming and came up with new funny moves.

But much more important is how this trick was pulled off. The secret was revealed by Nina Grebeshkova, wife of Leonid Gaidai. Only in 2010, she shared how they filmed the “Prisoner of the Caucasus”.

According to the actress, Nikulin’s heel was scratched by the director himself. He hid behind Georgy Vitsin, who was sitting in the foreground, and covered his hand with a blanket. As it turned out, everything ingenious is really simple.
