Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Uses Artificial Intelligence to Detect Fraud in New York Subway Stations

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) in New York has used artificial intelligence to detect fraud in several subway stations.

Here’s what we know

According to an MTA report, artificial intelligence was used at seven city stations in May to track unpaid rides. The authorities use this data to compare it to the fares paid.

More than 50% of fraud is attributed to people going through the emergency exit. 20% of passengers jump over the turnstile, 16% slip through the gaps and 12% go under the turnstile.

The report says the largest peak in breakouts occurs between 3 and 4 p.m., with a smaller peak during the morning peak period.

Last year, the agency estimated that losses from fare evasion amounted to $690 million.

This year, CCTV technology will be “extended to approximately two dozen additional stations”.
