Government-Party Council Discusses Measures to Protect Teaching Rights: The Power of the People in Action

The power of the people and the government will hold a party-government council at the National Assembly today (26th) and discuss measures to protect teaching rights.

This council is an action taken following the recent death of an elementary school teacher and voices calling for urgent protection of teaching rights.

From the party, Park Dae-tae, chairman of the policy committee, and Lee Tae-gyu, the ruling party secretary of the National Assembly Education Committee, will attend, and from the government, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Lee Ju-ho will attend.

At the meeting, it is expected that institutional measures to prevent infringement of teaching rights and support the restoration of teachers’ status will be discussed.

Currently, a bill to prevent teachers from being reported as perpetrators of child abuse crimes (Amendment to the Elementary and Secondary Education Act) and a bill to record measures taken against students who violate educational activities (Teachers Status Improvement Act) are pending in the National Assembly.

In addition, it is expected that discussions will be held regarding the revision of the student human rights ordinance, which the Ministry of Education cited as one of the causes of the shrinking of teachers’ legitimate educational activities.

Along with this, the government and the party will also hold a party-government council to set the standards for welfare programs such as standard median income and livelihood benefits in 2024.

From the party, Policy Committee Chairman Park Dae-tae and Policy Committee Senior Vice Chairman Lee Man-hee will attend, and from the government, Minister of Health and Welfare Cho Kyu-hong and Second Vice Minister of Strategy and Finance Kim Wan-seop will attend.

An official from the People’s Power Welfare Committee said, “According to the welfare policy of the Yoon Seok-yeol government, we will expand the recipients of livelihood benefits and increase livelihood benefits in a way that aims for welfare for the weak rather than universal welfare.”
