On July 25, the Papal Decree enters into force, by which it is determined that the two previous foundations “Good Samaritan” and “Justice and Peace” are merged into one called “Van Thuân”.

The new foundation is named after Vietnamese Cardinal François-Xavier Nguyen Van Tuan, a victim of the communist regime. He spent 13 years in prisons, after which he was the head of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace. The cardinal died in Rome on September 16, 2002. On May 4, 2017, Pope Francis declared him venerable. His beatification process is currently underway.
The aforementioned Order was already approved on July 3, when the Pope received the head of the Dicastery for Integral Human Development, Cardinal Michael Cerny, in audience. It also stipulates that until new statutes are issued, the legacy of the Good Samaritan and Justice and Peace foundations will be transferred to the new Van Thuân foundation. The decree enters into force on July 25 with its publication in L’Osservatore Romano and Acta Apostolicae Sedis.
