The Viennese ÖVP boss Karl Mahrer recently caused a stir with advertising videos – for example from the Brunnenmarkt or the Viktor-Adler-Markt. Now the ex-policeman has released a new clip. This time from Vienna’s Mariahilfer Strasse. It denounced “camping homeless people, mostly from other EU countries”, which created a feeling of insecurity in the population. Shots of homeless people sleeping at the entrances to shops are shown.
“Security and human dignity must also be a matter of course in public spaces – no one should have to spend the night outdoors. And nobody should be afraid of being attacked with a knife at night,” writes Mahrer in the description of the video on Instagram.
Win back FPÖ voters
The story of how the clip came about is controversial: during filming two weeks ago, the ex-cop called police officers when he saw an apparently homeless alcoholic sleeping on a park bench. Silvio Heinze, district councilor of the Greens in Vienna-Neubau, saw this by accident and tweeted it immediately. Heinze wrote that he observed Mahrer creating a scandal. The criticism: The ÖVP boss did not ask how the man was doing and did not notify the rescue team. Mahrer defended himself against the allegations. In any case, said scene is now missing in the published video.
With his widely discussed videos and the focus on the issue of security, Mahrer wants to win back voters from the Freedom Party. They have already reacted: In a statement on Mariahilfer Strasse, the FP district party chairman in Mariahilfer Leo Kohlbauer calls for “solutions”, not “black voyeurs”. (me)
