Tragic Accident at Austerlitz Basin Construction Site in Paris: Updates on Investigation and Project Progress

In the heart of Paris, this Friday, June 16, 2023, the teams of an important project are bereaved. A traffic accident on the right-of-way of the Austerlitz basin site resulted in the death of a man, a worker who was taking part in the work.

The accident took place on the right-of-way located in the 12th arrondissement, right bank, near the forensic institute, indicates the city of Paris, project owner. The man was hit by a vehicle traveling in reverse, on a part where traffic is organized with a one-way lane. Injured, the victim was taken care of by the emergency services who provided resuscitation care on the spot. Without being able to save her.

The police and labor inspection services went on site to make the first findings and an investigation was opened to shed light on the circumstances of this tragedy. The services of the city of Paris were also present, the town hall ensuring that it “will provide all its assistance to the various investigations”. A psychological support unit has been activated, while the City explains that it stands “alongside the loved ones and the family of the victim to provide them with help and assistance”.

An “exceptional” project in the heart of Paris

The construction of the Austerlitz basin is being carried out by the Impluvium consortium, bringing together Bessac, Soletanche-Bachy, Sefi-Intrafor and Sade around the works agent Urbaine (Fayat group). The project is often described as exceptional, because it consists of the creation of an underground storage basin capable of collecting 46,000m3 of wastewater mixed with rainwater, connected by a tunnel to the 12th arrondissement, where the sewers arrive. The objective is to improve the quality of the water in the Seine by collecting excess water during major storms, to prevent the rains from saturating the sewerage network and the discharge of waste water into the Seine.

The authorities thus hope to eliminate three-quarters of the pollution in the river and make it “swimmable”. In particular for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2024 where events must be organized in the Seine. Work on this infrastructure, estimated at 80 million euros, began at the end of 2020 and should be completed in April 2024.
