The much-discussed larva that lived in Freek Vonk’s leg for three months has turned into a fly. The TV biologist enthusiastically shares the news on Instagram. He writes that Kwak, as he calls the animal, has become a ‘gem’.
,,After almost two months of being in suspense, the time has finally come tonight! Kwak de Larf (or actually Kwak de Pop!) has completed its breathtaking metamorphosis and has crawled out of its cocoon as an adult fly (hornet) last night…”, says Vonk with a series of photos of Kwak. ,,And WHOAAHH, not normal, what a BEAUTIFUL animal! Kwak is about the size of a bumblebee and has glowing red eyes, a beautiful silver face, and a dazzling blue abdomen with a shimmering metallic sheen.”

According to Vonk, the fly is only found in the tropics of Central and South America and is rarely seen. ,,So that we have been able to photograph and film him so extensively is unique. We will of course include those images in the video that I will post later this summer – and in which everything comes back: from the very first signs that the larvae had crawled into my leg, their development, birth, pupation, to the moment it emerges from its cocoon as an adult hornet.
Meat and blood
The 40-year-old Vonk looks back on ‘a SUPER bizarre adventure’, he continues. ,,Because no matter how I look at this fly, it is literally my own flesh and blood… And that is really a very special feeling! And honestly, if you look at that sweet face, you can see that it is my child, right? he jokes.
Vonk cannot really enjoy his ‘baby’ for long: such flies do not live longer than a few days. They don’t even have mouthparts, so they can’t eat, drink, or bite. They also cannot sting. So this fly is completely harmless.”
Originally there were three larvae in the biologist’s leg. The other two, Huey and Dewey, died before they were fully grown.
