Summer Water Play Season: Beware of Contagious Eye Diseases

[Medical Column] Summer Vacation Water Play Season… “Beware of Contagious Eye⁣ Diseases”

BGN Bright Eye Clinic, Director Song Yoon-joong

As ⁢the summer vacation approached, college student Yoon Mo (22) ⁢recently visited an eye clinic after returning ‍from a trip⁣ to a⁤ pension with ⁢friends. Yoon‌ wore ‌contact lenses while swimming in the pension’s pool, and since returning home,‍ he has been‌ experiencing itchy and gritty eyes. After visiting the hospital, Yoon was‍ diagnosed with epidemic keratoconjunctivitis ‍and was prescribed⁣ eye drops and antibiotics.

Common eye diseases that occur after summer water play are commonly known as ⁢”Apollo eye diseases,” ‌which include⁣ acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis ‌and⁣ epidemic‌ keratoconjunctivitis. While they ⁢are⁢ mainly ⁤caused by ‌pollen or fine dust in the spring, they are caused by ⁢adenovirus infiltration during the summer. When adenovirus infiltrates the⁣ conjunctiva,‍ it‍ causes conjunctivitis, and if it infiltrates the cornea, it causes keratoconjunctivitis.

When infected with adenovirus, symptoms such as congestion, eye discharge,‍ foreign body sensation, pain, ⁣tearing, eye irritation,‌ eyelid ‍swelling, and itching occur. The important thing to note is that both epidemic‌ keratoconjunctivitis and keratoconjunctivitis are⁤ highly contagious. Due to‍ their short incubation period and rapid transmission, if there are any symptoms after water play, it⁤ is⁣ important to avoid contact with others.

Acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis usually resolves naturally without any complications after one week, and epidemic keratoconjunctivitis resolves within 3-4 weeks. However, due ‌to the significant discomfort it causes in daily life, it is ‌recommended to seek treatment from an eye clinic. Proper administration of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops after consultation can reduce discomfort caused by inflammation.

Above all, since vision determines the quality of⁤ daily life, it ⁣is important to practice ⁣the following‌ preventive measures before water play:

Firstly, ⁤when engaging ⁤in water ‌play, remove contact lenses and wear goggles. Wearing ‌contact lenses hinders proper oxygen supply to the ‍cornea and ‌makes it vulnerable to bacterial infections. Moreover, even if the water appears clean to⁤ the⁢ naked eye, various foreign ⁢substances, bacteria,⁢ and viruses float in
