A fire completely destroyed the building housing the grocery store and the only pharmacy in the municipality of Blanc-Sablon, in the Lower North Shore, on Sunday evening.
It’s a hard blow for the village of just over 1100 inhabitants.
The cause of the fire was accidental, according to initial findings.
The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) was called around 10:30 p.m. Sunday evening to assist the firefighters and manage a security perimeter.
Firefighters from the municipality of Blanc-Sablon fought the flames until late at night and also received help from neighboring firefighters in Labrador.
According to CFBS radio in Blanc-Sablon, the JL Joncas grocery store had been part of the community since 1954.
As for the Uniprix Clinique Danielle Driscoll pharmacy, it opened its doors in the last decade.
The mayor of Blanc-Sablon is also a former employee of the pharmacy.
Andrew Etheridge cannot believe that he no longer sees the large building at the entrance to the village.
The good news is that if all goes well, the pharmacy will reopen in a new location by the end of the week.
The equipment and medications are already on their way and, until then, the pharmacies of Sept-Îles will take care of the residents of Kegaska in Saint-Augustin.
Those from Vieux-Fort to Blanc-Sablon can count on the help of the pharmacy at the Center de santé de Blanc-Sablon.
