8 Habits That Can Help You Live 20 Years Longer

If you strive for a long and healthy life, you can ask yourself a lot of things. For example, why do some people live to be 100 years old? Or where do people live the longest? Habits have now been identified that could allow people to live more than 20 years longer.

Researchers have revealed eight habits that could extend life. The findings were presented at Nutrition 2023. That’s the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition and it confirms many tips that are mostly known.

Healthy lifestyle research

The study shows that low physical activity, opioid use and smoking had the greatest influence on longevity. Those factors are associated with a 30 to 45 percent higher risk of earlier death. Stress, excessive drinking or binge drinking, poor nutrition and poor sleep are also not seen as ‘conducive’. Those were each associated with about a 20 percent higher risk of death.

In addition, a lack of positive social relationships was associated with a 5 percent increased risk of death. The study used data from medical records and questionnaires collected from more than 700,000 people enrolled in the Veterans Affairs Million Veteran Program between 2011 and 2019.

Live more than 20 years longer on average

The study found that men who have all eight of the above habits by age 40 are expected to live an average of 24 years longer than men who have none of these habits. For women, having all eight healthy lifestyle factors in middle age was associated with an additional 21 years of life compared to women who had none of these habits.

“We were really surprised how much could be gained by adopting one, two, three or all eight lifestyle factors,” Xuan-Mai Nguyen, a health sciences specialist in the department of veterans’ affairs and a fourth-year medical student at Carle Illinois College of Medicine, said. Metro UK. “Our research results suggest that adopting a healthy lifestyle is important for both public health and personal well-being. The earlier the better, but even making a small change when you’re 40, 50 or 60 is still beneficial.”

The researchers say their findings, which have not been peer-reviewed, highlight the role of lifestyle factors in contributing to chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease leading to disability and death.
