“The Bouches-du-Rhône and more generally all the departments of the Mediterranean area will be affected by a situation of strong winds, with the tramontana and the mistral”, underlined Colonel Jean-Luc Beccari, director of the Fire and Rescue Service (Sdis) of Bouches-du-Rhône.

Massif forbidden to access

This red alert, which comes as Greece fights against dramatic fires, especially on the tourist island of Rhodesis the first recorded since the creation of the Météo-France forest weather forecast.

The department of south-eastern France is already placed in orange vigilance (high risk) this Monday by Météo-France. Tuesday, Vaucluse and Var will also be classified in orange.

Since the beginning of the summer, several massifs in the Bouches-du-Rhône and the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur region had already been banned from access by the prefectures to prevent any fire starting. Nine out of ten fires are of human origin and mainly the result of carelessness, recalls Météo-France.

400 more firefighters

“We are going to adapt and enhance our preventive measures”, insisted Colonel Beccari, considering that the Bouches-du-Rhône would be faced with significant risks “probably for two days”, Tuesday and Wednesday. These measures will involve the prepositioning of 400 additional firefighters in the department, in addition to the 500 firefighters on duty.
