New Zealand’s justice minister, Kerry Allan, has resigned from her post after police charged her with reckless driving and resisting law enforcement over a road accident.
What happened?
Allan was involved in a road accident Sunday night in the capital, Wellington, in northern New Zealand, Prime Minister Chris Hepkins said.
Hepkins added that the minister was arrested and taken to a police station, and released hours later.
The police charged the minister with reckless driving and resisting a police officer while he was on duty.
Allan was fined by the police after finding that his blood alcohol level was higher than the legal limit in the country.
The minister was also summoned to appear in court at a later date.
The Prime Minister indicated that he had spoken to her on Monday morning and informed her that it was no longer appropriate for her to remain a minister in the government, as it is inconceivable that the Minister of Justice be accused of committing a criminal offence.
The minister accepted her boss’s request and submitted her resignation.
Scandal series
The minister was at one stage considered the rising star in the current ruling Liberal Labor Party, but she withdrew from the limelight and took a leave for a period “for her mental health” after she entered into a public dispute with her partner, and she was also pursued by accusations of mistreatment of her workers.
The minister’s incident is a new episode in a series of scandals involving the ministers of the Hibkins government, several months after the last elections.
Last June, the Minister for Transport and Immigration, Michael Wood, resigned, after failing to disclose potential conflicts of interest with shares he owned.
In March, Police Minister Stuart Nash was sacked after it emerged he had divulged confidential information to donors.
The scandals have benefited the Conservative opposition, with polls showing them ahead of the ruling Liberal Labor Party.
