Jānis Kubilis studied at Nereta school, later at Smiltene dairy school. After the war, he returned to Neretva, from where he went to Riga to continue his education. He had planned to enter the Conservatory, but the brilliant performance of Žanis Katlapas in the play “The Lost Son” changed his mind, and Kubilis, together with his future spouse Lilija, entered the Drama Theater Studio, which he graduated in 1948 and was hired at the National Theatre.

The first big roles were realized mainly under teacher and director Vera Baļuna – Kurchayev in Alexander Ostrovsky’s play “Also the wise man in review”, Petya Trofimov in Anton Chekhov’s “The Cherry Orchard”, Herman in Alexey Arbuzov’s “Tanya”, Cassio in William Shakespeare’s drama “Othello”.

As suggested by the literary advisor of the National Theatre Ieva Struka: “The period between the 30s and 40s is a time of prosperity for most great actors, including for Jānis Kubilis. (..) The theater repertoire is also becoming wider, “correctly” interpreted Latvian classics are returning to it, popular foreign novels and plays are entering it, as long as the director finds an argument that what he wants to reveal to the Soviet audience is the dark side of capitalism, ruined human lives and ridiculous virtues .
