Baldur’s Gate 3 Introduces An Infamous and Annoying NPC: Meet Naaber

The recently released trailer for Baldur’s Gate 3 drew at least one comparison to one of the most memorable and infamous NPCs in the entire history of The Elder Scrolls.

The Naaber character video posted Sunday by developer Larian Studios has nothing to do with how annoying he is to the player character. Singing a fake version of the famous popular song “Happy Birthday” to find out your character’s name, Naaber will follow the player character everywhere, making obnoxious comments.

“There’s a character that was specifically written to be incredibly annoying, and people who played the original games would certainly recognize the line he came from,” explains assistant writer Crystal Dean. “So the minute you meet him, he starts following you around, constantly hitting on you, and you can try to tell him to shut up, and he just doesn’t.”

The character is voiced by popular Twitch streamer Cohh Carnage, who commented on his role: “I’ve been training my whole life to play a very annoying guy.“. Dean jokingly remarked during the video that you can (in-game or in real life) push the Cohh Carnage into the river, although she discourages anyone from doing so in real life.

Since Dean mentioned Naaber’s bloodline, it’s likely that he is a descendant of (or at least inspired by) the overly talkative character known as Nuber from the original Baldur’s Gate. One Reddit user, mikeymoonshjne, said of the similarities between the two: “Ahahaha, I wonder if there will be a reward for putting up with him, like with Noubert».

The character is already attracting a lot of attention and appreciation, as well as at least one comparison to Annoying Fan, a character from The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion who constantly follows you after you become a great Arena champion, and even resurrects every few days if you or someone else kills him.

Baldur’s Gate 3 will release on August 3 for PC and September 6 for PlayStation 5.
