The collapse of a bridge under repair has killed one person and injured eight others, Greek authorities said. The fire service said it was called shortly after noon local time when part of a bridge collapsed in Patras, in the Proastio area on the way to the capital Athens. Eight people were injured and sent to hospitals, and one person died in the collapse, the fire department said.
About 35 firefighters with 12 cars, as well as drones and special rescue vehicles were sent to the scene of the accident. Fire department spokesman Vassilis Vatrakoiannis said the bridge has been closed to traffic since July 20 “due to the destruction of the underpass” by the facility.
The reasons for the collapse of the bridge, which connects the port of Patras on the Peloponnese peninsula in southwestern Greece with Athens, are not clear. Efthimios Lekas, president of the Earthquake Protection Organization, told ERT television that the bridge had stability problems that were known to authorities. Restoration work began in 2021 at a cost of more than six million euros, the broadcaster claimed.
