In the 19th and 20th centuries, at the gates of New York, nearly 150 Caturiges experienced the joy and immense relief of hearing these words resonate: “ Welcome to America !”. After having satisfied the last checks, this short sentence indeed signed their acceptance on American soil.
Why these many departures, what was the life of these men and women there, and how was their integration? The Association for the Protection and Promotion of Caturige Heritage (ASPCC05) offers to discover it thanks to its new exhibition, richly documented, which is held until August 15 in the library of the elementary school.
This Saturday, July 22, during the opening of the exhibition, the association “L’Escoureta dou Parpaioun” humorously presented a small skit in patois on the departure of the Caturiges to America.
The exhibition suggests taking the boat “Le Paris” from Marseille to Le Havre, then to New York. It required a lot of research, preparation, with various objects: trunks, suitcases…
The exhibition is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and on Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Admission is free, open to all.
