While not everyone needs to take vitamin supplements because they can get what they need by eating a healthy, balanced diet, there are some people who take them to restore an imbalance or improve their health.
For example, while from late March or early April to late September most people can get all the vitamin D they need from the sun, during the fall and winter it may be beneficial to take a supplement. And many people can get enough vitamin B-12 through a balanced diet, but older adults, vegetarians, and vegans may need a supplement to replenish their levels.
While individuals may have their own reasons for taking vitamins, it seems that many of us are actually taking them wrong. Many people take their vitamins in the morning as part of their daily routine and all at once, but it turns out that’s not always the best thing to do.
Kate Booker, nutritionist at Nutrition Geeks, warned that timing is key when it comes to getting the most out of your supplements – and spacing them out can also be beneficial.
The right time to take vitamins
Speaking to The Mirror, Kate explained: “A lot of people take all their supplements in the morning or in the evening, all at once, but there are a few that you could benefit from if you take them at the optimal times throughout the day.”
So what time of day should you take specific vitamins to get the most out of them? Kate explained: “B vitamins are best when taken in the morning as they can be stimulating and help boost energy.”
“Vitamin C is water soluble and any excess will be flushed out, so it’s better to split your dose and take it throughout the day rather than taking it all at once.”
“Vitamin D is best taken in the middle of the day because that’s when you naturally produce vitamin D from the sun.” “Magnesium is best administered at night to encourage good sleep. Magnesium is also needed to make vitamin D, so if you’ve been safely exposed to the sun, it might be beneficial to include some magnesium as well.”
“Ashwagandha can help your body respond better to stress and reduce anxiety, some people prefer to take it at night.”
