Monitoring the Election Process in Cambodia: Insights from Agung Laksono and the CAPDI Delegation

Phnom Penh

The general election process (election) in Cambodia which was attended by 18 political parties has been held today. The final voter list (DPT) in Cambodia, accompanied by a photo of voters, seems to have caught the attention of the Head of Delegation of the Asia Pacific Democrats International (CAPDI) Centrist Organization. Great Laksono.

Agung led the CAPDI group to directly monitor the voting up to the counting of election votes in Cambodia at TPS Toul Krok Primary School and at Indradevi High School, Cambodia, Sunday (23/7/2023). CAPDI is an organization that brings together political and civil party figures from the moderate spectrum.

CAPDI is also an organization that oversees the political system and monitors elections in various countries. Apart from Capdi, another organization that participated in monitoring the election here was the International Conference of Asian Political Party (ICAAP). There are 330 international election observers from 65 countries.

Agung visited 2 polling stations and saw a series of voting processes. Agung seems to be looking closely at the fixed election list which looks different.

Agung and the CAPDI delegation were interested in seeing the DPT displayed in front of the TPS. Apparently, the Cambodian KPU included photos of voters in the DPT. TPS officers seem to match the voters’ faces with the photos listed before entering the voting booth.

Agung said that the Indonesian KPU could emulate this in the election process. Agung said that the DPT that includes a photo can reduce fraud in elections.

“I see that in Cambodia it can be done, of course in our country which also has the same technology like this it can be done. We will see the urgency of course being able to consider the KPU like this, so it is impossible for someone who is not entitled to vote, then people have jockeys and so on,” said Agung.

Agung said that the DPT, accompanied by photos of voters, was the best way in the election process. Agung said the voting process was at TPS in Cambodia very orderly.

“And this is the best way to have a photo, there is a name, everyone who comes must show their ID card, according to what is not there, only then can the next process arrive at the ink marks through the index finger,” said Agung, who is also a member of the Presidential Advisory Council (Wantimpres).
