Most blood is used for blood transfusions for blood cancer patients, but in the summer, motorcycle and car accidents, as well as body burns, which require blood transfusions, are a pressing problem, said Ilze Maskalāne, head of the Public Relations Department of the State Blood Donor Center (VADC).
She pointed out that hospital demand for blood components is consistently high, and continued responsiveness of donors is important to ensure sufficient blood supply.
Currently, VADC is very much looking forward to donors of blood groups 0-, A- and A+, however, the situation is changing rapidly. Maskalane explained that the supply of a particular blood group can drop rapidly if a hospital requires a larger number of blood doses, for example, if a patient has had serious bleeding during surgery or childbirth. It should also be noted that blood components may only be stored for 35 days.
Therefore, VADC is waiting for donors of all blood groups.
VADC donors are waiting for all permanent donation locations in Riga – Sēlpils Street 9, Brīvības Bulvāri 32, Hipoprāta Street 2, Kurzeme branch – Liepāja Hospital (by prior appointment), Latgale branch – Rēzekne Hospital, Ventspils – North Kurzeme Regional Hospital, as well as blood preparation departments of regional hospitals – Jelgava, Valmiera and Daugavpils.
Blood can be donated if the donor meets all the necessary criteria and if he has not been in contact with people suspected of having Covid-19 in the last 14 days.
The donor must have a valid personal identification document with him – a passport, identity card (eID) or any other personal identification document that contains a personal code, name, surname and photo. Donors are not accepted without an identity document. A bank account number is required for reimbursement.
