Hi all !
I booked an Airbnb in Brooklyn for 1 week and a half and I’m quite happy with it because the hotel prices are extremely high (250€/night), I’ve never seen that!
The Airbnb that I took has excellent reviews. However, now I’m still a little stressed because I read in the 2023 backpacker’s guide to New York that a law could prohibit Airbnbs in buildings with a lot of apartments. The Airbnb I took is in a building with 2 floors not counting the ground floor so it may only contain 2 apartments…
Does anyone here know if the risk of being evicted from the Airbnb during my stay is high or not?
Thanks in advance !
Bonjour,
Indeed NY is expensive overall.
For your, airbnb legislation is very strict in NY.
Here are some rules:
Either it is the principal residence of the lessor. He lives in rented accommodation. In this case, there must be no separation between the rented part and the rest of the dwelling.
Or, if the lessor does not live there, the rented accommodation must be in a building with a maximum of two apartments.
The accommodations are normally valid for two people max. Therefore with family or friends, it is impossible to rent an airbnb.
These rules are applicable in all areas of NY, but apparently also in New Jersey.
There is potentially a risk in renting something not legal, not having a rental on arrival or a risk of eviction is possible.

Bonjour,
You can find much cheaper if you agree to leave the center of Manhattan.
@yoangel31 My god this is stressful… knowing that I have already paid part of the stay already. I thought Airbnb was checking the accommodations on its platform… That said, maybe the accommodation is usually inhabited by the owner or the apartment above is a duplex or there are only 2 apartments in the building… The building is very small… Unfortunately there was not much info about that in the ad. There is no sure way to know if the accommodation is safe or not unless you live directly with the locals in fact…
@sourisgrise in any case in the guide the cheapest hotels are more than 150€ minimum not to say 200€…
What guide are you referring to?
The backpacker ?
You don’t have to stick to it.
Do a search through Book…Expedia…or Hote…com and you will find hotels at a much lower cost.
Check out the LIC (Long Island City) offering in Queens.
This is often the best value for money hotel plan at a midtown Manhattan subway station.

What is the address of the property offered for rent?
Of course, the uncertainties of choosing an Airbnb can be stressful.
You can not cancel the part already paid?
As mousegrise says, by going to hotel price comparators, you can surely find cheaper in the LIC area.
