EU Official Calls for Conditionality of Aid on Removal of Anti-Semitism from Palestinian Textbooks

(JNS) The representative of European Unionwho oversees aid to the Palestinian Authority, has advocated making the release of funds conditional on the removal of incitement and anti-Semitism from the PA’s textbooks.

The comments follow two European Parliament resolutions calling for the removal of all anti-Semitic references and examples inciting hatred and violence from Palestinian textbooks, as well as calls for a funding freeze.

“Incitement to hatred and violence and the glorification of terror go against the core values of the EU”tweeted Oliver Várhelyi, the EU Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy. “This is poison for our society, especially in classrooms and textbooks. There can be no justification for turning a blind eye, either in Europe or beyond.”

In the tweet, the EU representative explained that the “Commission takes due note of this request from the budgetary authority.”

In May, Várhelyi said the European Union would “make sure it does not fund Palestinian textbooks that incite anti-Israel.” He had previously announced that the European Union would carry out a second study on the Palestinian Authority’s textbooks.

Unlike previous resolutions, which have mentioned incitement to violence without directly calling for the elimination of anti-Semitism, the text of last week’s resolutions explicitly links EU-funded textbooks to “increasing youth involvement in terrorist attacks”.

The European Parliament resolutions state that the European Union should freeze its funding for the PA until its curriculum is brought into line with UNESCO standards.
