Makassed University honors graduates and highlights challenges facing Lebanon’s education and healthcare sectors

Makassed University in Beirut celebrated the distribution of certificates to its graduates from the Faculty of Islamic Studies, the Faculty of Nursing and Health Sciences, and the Faculty of Teacher Training, in the presence of the Minister of Public Health in the caretaker government, Firas Al-Abyad, the President of the Makassed Association, Dr.

In a speech to the attendees, the Minister of Health said: “Science and knowledge are the foundations of progress. There would be no health, construction, economy, prosperity, or well-being, had it not been for what man learned from the laws of creation and the Sunnahs of the world, (and you were only given a little knowledge). And here we are on the verge of new sciences, such as artificial intelligence and nanosciences, and others, and the applications of science will be in your hands, and your generation and the generations that follow will adopt them. We ask God to teach us what benefits us, and to benefit us with what we have learned.”

He added, “The successive crises in Lebanon have led to waves of emigration among our educated youth, especially among the medical and nursing cadres, and this is what constitutes the most important challenges facing our health system and our societal security. In the past, universities in Lebanon played a major role in the prosperity our country witnessed, especially after independence, and Lebanon became the University of the East. However, wars and conflicts, and the predominance of factional and individual interests, have led us to the great decline in the education sector, which in turn was reflected in the education and preparation of health cadres.” From here, we, as the Ministry of Public Health, sound the alarm, as the continuation of crises without a horizon for a solution will only lead to a further decline in the level of health services provided, and to more migration of cadres and human energies, especially among graduates. Therefore, the step taken by the Ministry was to support the demands of health workers and their unions to ensure that they receive salaries that guarantee them and their families a decent living that enables them to stand firm in their homeland and serve their families, and it is a temporary solution waiting for the homeland to restore its health and the sectors to recover.”

He concluded: “We call on our society to unite and cooperate behind Makassed University and Association, and to provide it with all aid and support, to ensure its continuity in carrying out its heavy burden in raising generations, treating patients, responding to the needy, and preserving values and heritage.”
