Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto failed to win Korea Open 2023 after falling in the final of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty (India) with a score of 21-17, 13-21, 14-21 in 62 minutes.
Compete at Jinnam Stadium, Sunday (23/7), Fajar/Rian appeared dominant from the start. They managed to lead comfortably 11-4 at the interval. But after the break, Rankireddy/Shetty gave fierce resistance.
Fajar/Rian managed to lead 16-9, then 19-10. However, the Indian duo managed to reduce the distance to 16-19. Even so, Fajar/Rian still managed to secure the first game by winning 21-17.
In the second game, the duel was even tighter. After chasing each other for 6-6 points, Rankireddy/Shetty slowly drifted away from the chase and closed the interval with an 11-8 lead.
After the break, Rankireddy/Shetty managed to widen the gap to 13-9, and kept away until 16-11. Rian’s backhand hitting the net changed the score to 17-11. The Indian duo continued to stay away by adding three consecutive points to 20-11.
Shetty’s hitting the net twice had changed the score to 13-20, but she made up for it with a hard smash that closed the second game with a score of 21-13. Score to 1-1.
In the deciding game, Rankireddy/Shetty led up to 8-4 first. Shetty hit the net to make it 5-8, but she responded with a smash up front that made it 9-5.
Fajar/Rian tried to get up and managed to close the distance to 8-10, but Fajar’s drive went wide to make the score 11-8 for India at the interval. After the break, the match was getting tense.
India led until 12-9, but Rankireddy hit the net to change the score to 10-12. Shetty then hit back at 13-10 with a half-ball smash at the net.
Indonesia closed the gap again by gaining the 11th point, but Rankireddy’s smash which hit the net and entered Indonesia’s game area made India lead 14-11. Rankireddy then won a shootout with Fajar, changing the score to 15-11.
Fajar/Rian then closed the distance to 12-15, but Fajar, who was less calm in front of the net, failed to cross the ball, changing the score to 16-12. Rian’s drop shot that hit the net made India even more comfortable with a score of 17-12.
Fajar/Rian tried to put up a fight, but in the end a number of their mistakes made it easier for India to become champions. Rankireddy/Shetty got the four points they needed to win 21-14 in the third game.
Thus, Indonesia is ensured without a title. In the other four numbers, China won two titles, the rest went to hosts South Korea and Denmark.
