Ensuring Quality and Safety: Increased Checks on Ice Cream in Bulgaria

With the nice and warm weather, ice creams become more and more tempting. And with the start of summer, the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency has started increased checks on the quality of the ice treat that is offered to us. Inspections are conducted in production workshops and sales sites.

“It is monitored whether the technological process, the parameters of pasteurization, tempering and storage of the ice cream, labeling, composition and allergens, if any, are observed”, explained Dr. Zlatina Dimova, director of ODBH – Varna.

How high temperatures affect the products we consume

And while in most places the requirements are met, inspections show that there are also sites with gross violations: use of raw materials with an expired shelf life, work of personnel with expired health certificates, etc.

Such violations were found in a production workshop in Varna. It has already been sealed by the control authorities, but nevertheless it has continued to carry out its activities.

“The person did not show up for the suspension order, although he was called to the ODBH – Varna. On the 14th, a conversation was held, during which the person again refused. On July 19, with the assistance of the “Economic Police”, the object was visited, but access was not ensured”, explained Dr. Nadezhda Petrova – ch. inspector at the ODBH.

Mass checks in the establishments that sell ice cream in the summer

The NOVA team reached out to the shop manager by phone, but to no avail.

“This is a crime under the Penal Code and we have taken appropriate actions with a letter to the other responsible institutions,” said Dr. Dimova.

Violators, however, are subject to serious fines, starting at BGN 2,000.
