In the last 10 years, the prevalence of type 1 diabetes mellitus in Indonesia has increased sevenfold, from 3.88 per 100 million population in 2000, to 28.19 per 100 million population in 2013. Prof. Dr. dr.
“Living with DMT1 is not easy and requires more than medical support. Proper management of DMT1 requires independent monitoring of blood sugar levels and a comprehensive understanding of the condition,” explained Changing Diabetes in Children (CDiC) Lead for Indonesia, through a written statement received detikcom Saturday (22/7/2023).
According to him, this figure was reported in the midst of limited management of type 1 diabetes mellitus cases in Indonesia. Therefore, Prof. Aman highlighted the need for good assistance to patients, especially those who are already in the chronic phase.
“There are still limitations in the management of DMT1 in Indonesia, but no child should die from diabetes. Therefore, increasing the knowledge and skills of patients and caregivers is the best way to prevent acute and chronic complications,” he ordered.
Separately, the Deputy Minister of Health Dr. Dante Saksono Harbuwono had previously revealed the ‘culprit’ behind the increasing number of diabetes. In fact, estimates of its prevalence generally touch 12 percent in 2023.
There are two factors, namely genetic and non-genetic or environmental. According to him, genetic factors cannot be avoided because they go hand in hand with an increase in population growth.
“So the possibility of diabetes arises because of the marriage model that carries the diabetes gene,” said Dante.
Meanwhile, non-genetic factors that cause diabetes, such as habits, bad lifestyle, and lifestyle, according to Dante, also contribute to the increasing trend of diabetes in Indonesia.
“We have intervened on a number of things that have increased, such as diabetes, maybe the numbers will be even higher if we don’t intervene. But what we cannot avoid is genetic factors. Now this is important, for cancer too,” he concluded.
