Flexible Devices: Unlikely to Beat Apple, According to Carl Pei

Flexible devices unlikely to beat Apple, thinks Carl Pei
In the segment of premium devices, Apple dominates with its 75% share
He didn’t rule out a puzzle from Nothing Pei, it’s very likely but not in the foreseeable future

If you were to look for one of the most prominent smartphone trends in recent years, you’d probably end up with flexible smartphones sooner or later. These are no longer just experimental devices for a narrow group of enthusiasts, but mainly thanks to Samsung, they are affordable devices that even ordinary mortals can afford. Although many users consider them to be the next step in the evolution of smartphones, not everyone is of the same opinion.

Apple’s flexible phones won’t let you down

Despite its undeniable “wow effect”, the majority of customers still do not want to pay for jigsaw puzzles, and the vast majority of them still prefer the classic construction. Even some manufacturers, led by Apple, do not yet believe in flexible smartphones and are patiently waiting to see where the future will move. Carl Pei, the CEO of Nothing, recently commented on the topic of jigsaw puzzles in a not so flattering way. Few people would probably suspect that because they are not fans of innovation.

“For us, every product has to be successful and profitable because we don’t have unlimited resources,” Pei responded when asked what are the factors behind Nothing not offering foldable phones. “Flexible phones are not very interesting for us yet. Once some of the design ailments like the visible crease in the display start to disappear and the software starts to adapt more to this new design, we might consider making our first puzzle.” Pei added. However, the founder of a successful company is not completely skeptical of flexible devices. “We’re not saying no, but I don’t think it’s something that will really change the market. I don’t think this is the thing that makes Android win over iOS. I don’t think that’s what’s going to take us from a low-key smartphone maker to the next tech giant.” he pointed out realistically.

Don’t overlook

Nothing Phone review (2): great phone, just without the wow effect

Although Android currently completely dominates the smartphone industry, if we consider only the premium segment, where Apple has almost all of its representatives, the situation will change dramatically. In this segment, i.e. phones for 600 dollars and more (approx. 15 thousand with VAT), the company from Cupertino participates in 75% of all sales, at least for last year. Given that jigsaw puzzles are almost exclusively above this price range, the chance of cutting a larger share from this segment is relatively small.
