The weather and climate workshop (WKW) in downtown Offenbach moved to new, larger premises in the spring. The design of the exhibition program for the new opening is in full swing. Until then, WKW will continue to offer workshops for kindergartens and school classes as well as a climate, culture and hands-on festival for the first time this summer and autumn with “Flying High”. In addition, “Today’s Building” is a mobile summer program for all age groups.
The new premises at Frankfurter Strasse 39 offer an impressive exhibition area of around 300 square meters and not only open up a long-term perspective for WKW, but also the future opportunity to create a diverse and interactive program with an even larger workshop and event area.
Engage in direct exchange with the local people
Halfway through the renovation work, the mayor of the city of Offenbach, Dr. Felix Schwenke and the President of the German Weather Service (DWD) Prof. Dr. Gerhard Adrian together with the mayor of the city of Offenbach, Sabine Groß, gave an overview of the status of the work. At the event, the DWD President emphasized the relevance of the weather and climate workshop: “The German Weather Service provides the scientific facts that form the basis for the content in the weather and climate workshop. By working with the city of Offenbach, we have the unique opportunity to exchange our information directly with the local people. It is important to us to raise awareness of climate change and to disseminate knowledge about it to society at large. In the course of climate change, extreme weather events will increase. As the German Weather Service, we are constantly working to improve our warning systems so that severe weather warnings reach people as early and as precisely as possible. Another important point is the issue of resilience. The weather and climate workshop project is therefore pursuing the important goal of establishing knowledge about weather hazards in the general knowledge of the population. Educational work is an aspect of the warning chain that should not be neglected, and the weather and climate workshop offers, among other things, great offers for kindergarten and school children, which we strongly support.”
dr Felix Schwenke, Mayor of the city of Offenbach, emphasizes how important the cooperation is for the city: “In joint sponsorship with the DWD, the most important public institution for the subject of weather and climate, we offer an offer on one of the most important topics of our time exclusively in the heart of Offenbach’s city center, which, thanks to the cooperation with the DWD, is of this quality in no other city in Germany. Together with the weather park, which also only exists in Offenbach, it underlines that Offenbach is the German “weather city”. The exhibitions in the WKW will continue to be interactive in the future. Instead of boredom, visitors can expect the opportunity to participate and thus a high-quality range of leisure activities. The weather workshop is a place of discovery and exploration. With its program, it provides a very good reason to visit downtown Offenbach and is a building block of a democratic and open urban society.”
Interlace scientific and cultural content in an exciting way
Sabine Groß, mayor and head of the climate department of the city of Offenbach, adds: “With its varied program of events, the WKW manages to interweave scientific and cultural content in an exciting way and thus opens up new perspectives. It interactively shows the influence of weather and climate as well as climate change on people, society and the environment and makes it clear that every contribution to climate protection, to maintaining our quality of life and to preserving the environment counts. Above all, it shows how we can all contribute through our behavior. Therefore, I am particularly pleased that the weather and climate workshop – also thanks to the good cooperation with the German weather service – has a long-term perspective in our city.” As an important milestone, a new cooperation agreement was drawn up between the German weather service and the city of Offenbach, which is currently about to be signed.
Until the reopening, the weather workshop is on the road with the mobile art campaign “Today’s Blue” in the city center and various districts of Offenbach. The climate, culture and hands-on festival “Höhenflug” will be playing in the city center from July 29th to October 28th with a performative scientific and cultural program. About the weather and climate workshop
The weather and climate workshop (WKW) is an interactive hands-on and learning workshop in Offenbach. It provides information about the weather, climate and climate change in a clear way and offers visitors of all ages the opportunity to explore the topic in a playful way and to learn about options for action in the field of climate protection. The WKW works closely with the German Weather Service and the Offenbach Weather Park to combine scientific knowledge with cultural aspects and to create a comprehensive range of educational opportunities. The WKW was initiated by the President of the DWD Prof. Dr. Gerhard Adrian and the mayor of the city of Offenbach, Dr. Felix Schwenke. The workshop is implemented by the DWD and the municipal offices for cultural management, economic development/city management and the environment, energy and climate protection.
