When the New York Jets signed Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers in a blockbuster trade in April, the biggest risk facing the franchise was not knowing how long the quarterback wanted to play.
The four-time NFL MVP had repeatedly flirted with resignation in recent years. However, current statements now suggest that the 39-year-old can imagine spending several years in the “Big Apple”.
“I’m not exactly a cliche guy. Most people would say, ‘I’ll take it one day at a time or one year at a time,'” he told ESPN Radio 98.7.
Rodgers promises several years for Jets
And further: “But the Jets gave up a lot for me and if I only played one year I would probably be doing them a disservice.”
However, Rodgers qualified: “Of course, this year should turn out to be a magical year, who knows?”
So if “A-Rod” wins the Super Bowl in his first season in New York, he could change his mind.
Physical condition crucial
According to Rodgers, the length of his career also depends on his physical condition: “It depends on how my body feels. I’ve made some changes in terms of training and nutrition this offseason. My body feels very, very good.”
However, the playmaker still struggles with certain signs of aging: “As you get older, you sometimes wake up in the morning and think: ‘Why does that hurt? Why does my knee hurt? Why does my shoulder hurt?'”
Meanwhile, Rodgers has eliminated fruits and processed foods from his diet, eating mostly protein. Time will tell if it brings the desired success.
“Talk to me in three to four months,” he said. “We’ll see how it feels, but the way I’m feeling now, I think I could play for a few more years.”
