Expectations for the new Christopher Nolan film are once again high. The director knew with thrillers like Inception in Tenet to impress. Can Oppenheimerthe story of the inventor of the atomic bomb, join previous successes?

NRC – 5 stars

Oppenheimer achieves unprecedented psychological depth for a Hollywood biofilm. Actor Cillian Murphy is perfect as Oppenheimer. Subtle but intense, able to act out a bottomless pit of emotions with just his eyes and clenched jaws.”

Oppenheimer is the best film directed by Christopher Nolan to date. And maybe the best movie he will ever make. Because he makes the fear of the bomb personal.”

de Volkskrant – 4 stars

“Nolan uses the power of repetition on his way to his nightmarish climax. Again those images of the fishbowl filling up with marbles – part of an earlier explanation scene about the technology behind the bomb. Again to the deafening footsteps of an elated room that Oppenheimer will address just after the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima.”

Oppenheimer serves up a stream of psychic horror, tapped straight from the brain of the man who is fully contemplating the consequences of his creation.”

AD – 5 stars

“Nolan juggles a lot of big themes. Science, war strategy, political intrigue, guilt and atonement, the destructive nature of man; he tackles it all.”

“As in many of his previous films, this is accompanied by a complex narrative structure. There are different timelines, some of which are in black and white. And don’t be alarmed if one of those threads starts in black and white, but suddenly switches to color halfway through. Everything to keep the viewer on track.”

Loyal – 4 stars

“Nolan’s fascination is the reality that then clouds good intentions and logical analyzes of the individual. How collisions with other elementary particles, with other people, complicate things.”

“Nolan portrays all these things crystal clear. A whole parade of characters passes in the three hours of play, but you don’t get confused for a moment about who does what. That shows an excellent storytelling technique.”

De Telegraaf – 5 stars

“The Dutch cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema used IMAX cameras and captured what he shot on 70mm film. The visual effects – such as the Trinity Test or Oppenheimer’s visions of an elusive physical reality – are practical and were not created digitally.”

“That approach gives the images unprecedented sharpness and detail and makes the story come in even more.”
