The Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT) again warns against increasing fat bikes. The reason is a sample of the BNNVARA program Box. The editors asked eight shops to introduce this special type of electric bicycle for a twelve-year-old child and to provide it with a throttle. Five of the eight stores agreed.
A fat bike is an electric bicycle with pedal assistance that cannot exceed 25 km per hour, has a motor of less than 250 watts and cannot drive without pedaling, making a throttle unnecessary.
But by boosting it, a fat bike becomes a moped for the law. “And then driving license, license plate, helmet and third-party insurance are mandatory,” said ILT director Karin Visser last month al. “We believe that sellers of such bicycles should take their responsibility. They should provide proper information to potential buyers and comply with laws and regulations.”
Penalties
Last year, the inspection warned 27 internet providers that sold fat bikes that went faster than 25 km per hour or had a power of more than 250 watts. They were told they were in violation because they were actually selling mopeds. Fifteen providers then stopped offering fat bikes.
In April, the ILT sent an order subject to periodic penalty payments to nine providers who nevertheless continued. That meant they could face a fine if they didn’t stop. The fine can be up to 15,000 euros. Proceedings against three providers are still pending.
The Fietsersbond argued in January for stricter rules for fat bikes:
