Sandstorm Causes Damage and Power Outages in Guaymas and Empalme, Sonora

Guaymas, Son. The sandstorm that hit the coastal region of Empalme and Guaymas in southern Sonora caused damage due to the collapse of trees, billboards and power poles that left the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) without service to more than 80 percent of the homes in these municipalities.

Around 7:00 p.m., a cloud of sand from the Del Valle area clouded the tourist region, which is currently at 90 percent of its hotel occupancy for this holiday season. Walkers and bathers who enjoyed the sunset in San Carlos had to run to take refuge in houses and hotels due to the strong winds loaded with sand with gusts that exceeded 90 kilometers per hour.

The State Civil Protection Unit reported a white balance, there are no injuries or injuries due to the damage in the Guaymas and Empalme region, the main affectation was that 80 percent of the population was left without electricity in Guaymas and personnel from the Federal Electricity Commission are already working to restore the service. Even CFE crews moved from Hermosillo to this area to help expedite the processes.

The Guaymas City Council reported damage to high voltage poles as well as public lighting in addition to telephone poles, several fallen trees were also reported, affected sheet metal roofs, and some billboards fell.

In Empalme, the public reported 15 downed poles and 20 trees, as well as various damages to 20 structures.

The Civil Protection authorities recommended that the population remain safe; They added that in the face of this type of phenomenon, it is appropriate to clarify that there is no possibility of detecting these atypical phenomena, with any type of measuring tool or device, as occurs with other natural events, so it is recommended to receive preventive information, always verify the notices that are made by the official accounts of the different levels of government.
