Two-Story Building Partially Collapses in Newark after Reported Explosion: Multiple Injuries and Displaced Families

NEW JERSEY — A two-story Newark residential building partially collapsed Friday after a reported explosion.

Local police and fire department crews responded to the building in South Pine Lane around 6 p.m.

The public security director confirmed that six people were injured, five of whom were hospitalized, including a man in serious condition.

The roar reverberated throughout the sector, causing fear among the neighbors.

“I got so bad and very nervous that I had to go back because it sounded as if that building had also come down,” said Marilyn Vélez, a neighbor of the neighborhood.

Other neighbors said that they had been smelling gas in the area for days.

The force of the explosion tore through much of the ceiling and several of the exterior walls of the second story.

In total, 13 families were displaced and are receiving attention from the authorities, according to officials.

The causes are under investigation. It has not been confirmed if it was a gas leak.
