Soekarno-Hatta Airport: Busiest Airport in Southeast Asia and Third Busiest in Asia Pacific

Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (Soetta) Tangerang was named the busiest airport in Southeast Asia. This airport is also the third busiest in Asia Pacific.

Airport Council International (ACI) released a list of the busiest airports in the world throughout 2020 on Wednesday (19/7/2023). They released the 2,600 busiest airports on the list, including Soetta Airport which occupies the top position.

Responding to this, the Main Director of Angkasa Pura II Muhammad Awaluddin said success Soekarno-Hatta Airport being in the top rank is the result of the hard work of all stakeholders.

“Last year the aviation sector faced the challenges of a pandemic, but has entered a recovery period. During this period, AP II and all stakeholders continued to strengthen domestic and international flight connectivity to make a significant contribution in driving economic growth and handling the pandemic,” Awaluddin said as quoted from Between.

ACI noted that the number of passenger movements at Soetta Airport from January to December 2022 reached 39.6 million people. Meanwhile at the world level, the number of aircraft passenger movements reached 6.6 billion people.

Awaluddin added that all stakeholders collaborated closely with the full support of the Ministry of BUMN and the Ministry of Transportation so that they succeeded in strengthening flight connectivity through reactivation of routes that had been closed during the pandemic. Then, increasing the frequency of flights on existing routes and opening new routes.

“This joint effort has brought Soekarno-Hatta Airport to become number one busiest in Southeast Asia and number three in Asia Pacific,” he said.

Meanwhile, AP II expressed its gratitude for the support of all parties in supporting the restoration of flight traffic at Soetta Airport.

“Thank you to all parties for the close cooperation and collaboration that never stops so that Soekarno-Hatta Airport can serve various flights 24 hours a day, ranging from regular flights, pandemic handling flights to flights to support global events in Indonesia,” said Awaluddin.

Then the Director of Operations of AP II Wendo Asrul Rose said that the success of Soetta Airport in the top ranking could not be separated from the mature operational plan carried out by all parties.

“Last year’s fast growth in domestic routes contributed significantly to the activities of Soekarno-Hatta Airport. AP II, airlines, ground handling and other stakeholders were able to carry out their operational plans properly so that we could accommodate existing demand,” said Wendo.

The readiness of infrastructure and facilities on the air side and land side also plays a vital role in ensuring the smooth running of flights.

AP II Technical Director Agus Wialdi said maintenance of infrastructure and facilities from the air side and land side, especially related to security and safety, has always been a priority.

Not only as the busiest airport, Soetta Airport also received a Skytrax award. Soetta Airport occupies the 9th position in the list of Best Airport Staff in Asia 2022 or rises one rank from the Best Airport Staff 2021 which is in 10th position.

In addition, Soetta Airport Executive General Manager Dwi Ananda said that Soetta Airport’s operations were also supported by digital infrastructure such as the Airport Operation Control Center (AOCC), Airport Infrastructure Control Center (AICC), and Land Transport Operation Center (LTOC).

“The existing digital infrastructure really supports collaboration between stakeholders, especially in the midst of growing air traffic during this recovery period,” said Dwi.

In 2023, AP II targets the number of passengers at the 20 airports managed cumulatively to reach 76.65 million people. The majority of passenger movements are projected to be at Soetta Airport.
