No holidays for the renovation of the Place de la République, in Lisieux (Calvados). Work continues at a brisk pace throughout the summer.

It is now a certainty, the initial timetable set by the municipality – first pickaxes in February, delivery in November – will not be respected due to various hazards, in particular some delays in the delivery of the paving stones.

And as the place must be freed up in December to host the carnival, the site will pause during the holidays and sales, before resuming at the beginning of 2024.

Three projects at the same time

The objective is therefore to make as much progress as possible by then.

“We had to revise our plans. It’s not easy, because the square is affected by three projects at the same time: ours, but also the sanitation and heating networks. There will therefore be a parenthesis during the winter, in agreement with the showmen. Traders have been informed, we meet with them regularly”.

Caroline Verhaeghe, deputy mayor in charge of the Heart of the City Action plan.

Step by step, slice by slice, the Place de la République is being transformed.

One of the city’s two main squares, along with Place Mitterrand, must become a place for walking and leisure, with much larger spaces reserved for pedestrians, as illustrated by the first developments carried out in rue Bordeaux-Boursin and its extension to the Au Coin Bio store.

In this month of July 2023, the construction site is focusing on the street located between the bar-PMU and the Jean-Macé nursery school (ex-Caroline Duchemin). Regarding the forecourt of the Jean-Macé elementary school, the entrance to which will then be oriented towards the Place de la République, the schedule has been modified.

Scheduled for the month of August, the paving will only take place after the holidays. “The roadway was demolished, but it is linked to the work on the networks. Everything will be repaired for the funfair, because the fairgrounds set up their big carousels on this part of the square,” says Caroline Verhaeghe.

Cobblestones on the forecourt of the media library

In the coming days, the machines will attack the forecourt of the media library, which will also be covered with cobblestones. Rue Pont-Mortain will take over at the start of the school year, as will the arcades, until November 2023.
