The Changing Landscape of Television Consumption in the Czech Republic

Television is still a matter of course for the Czechs, even though the majority now mainly consumes content on the Internet
For example, streaming services, the most popular being Netflix or the newcomer Voyo
Among digital televisions (IPTV), O2 TV leads the way, followed by Vodafone TV

The Association of Mobile Network Operators (APMS) had it drawn up survey regarding how Czech households feel about television and what content they watch on it. It is no surprise that television as a medium is still popular with Czechs. However, more people already watch Internet broadcasts than would rely on regular terrestrial DVB-T2 broadcasts. The analysis was prepared by the NMS Market Research agency.

Television is a given, but…

According to data collected during the survey, 91% of respondents have and watch television at home. Over 60% of people have a television connected to the Internet. However, according to NMS Market Research, the number is set to grow steeply in the coming years. After all, televisions without Internet access are slowly but surely disappearing from the market.

However, the survey showed a significant trend where Internet content has already displaced traditional terrestrial broadcasting. Respondents confided that they spend 40% of their time on Internet content, 32% on regular DVB-T2 television broadcasting and 28% on satellite or cable TV channels. It is the last service that is already de facto buried by diverse content on the Internet.

Don’t overlook

Do you use Netflix? This news will please every Czech

“In the 21st century, we need to start asking people how much time they spend watching TV programs on individual broadcast platforms. Drawing conclusions from how many people have an antenna from the roof connected to their TV is no longer valid in the world of streaming platforms.” aptly remarked the head of APMS, Jiří Grund.

Netflix, Voyo and O2 TV reign supreme

And it is precisely in the area of streaming platforms and prepaid digital television that the situation is most interesting. Almost 6 out of 10 households use some kind of streaming service, with Netflix, Voyo and HBO Max being the most popular. Digital TV with a wider range of programs is then used by 7 out of 10 households, the most popular being O2 TV, followed by Vodafone TV, Skylink and T-Mobile TV.

It is in this regard that it is important to point out that owning a television as a device located in the office or in the living room does not necessarily indicate how much television is watched. A large number of customers reach for the television as a screen suitable for watching high-quality movies, shows on the YouTube platform, or perhaps as an output medium for a game console or a virtual reality device.
