US President Joe Biden has chosen Admiral Lisa Franchetti as the head of the US Navy, the Associated Press and Reuters reported, citing an official announcement from the presidential administration.
Franchetti, who has 38 years of experience in the Navy, will be the first woman in this position, BTA adds.
But Biden’s decision to select Franchetti, an admiral with extensive experience in command and leadership in the Navy, went against the Pentagon chief’s recommendation on the matter, sources familiar with the matter said.
But Franchetti is the best possible choice for the job. She is the current Deputy Chief of Naval Operations and will be the first female member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin recommended that Biden select Admiral Samuel Paparo, the current commander of the Navy’s Pacific Fleet, for the post. But instead, Biden chose to nominate Paparo to head the US Indo-Pacific Command.
“Throughout her career, Admiral Franchetti has demonstrated extensive experience in both the operational and political realms,” Biden said in a statement. It noted that Franchetti is only the second female four-star admiral in the US Navy.

Last year, Biden chose Admiral Linda Fagan to head the US Coast Guard, Reuters recalls.
