Approx. 87 million people in the EU have a disability and the population is also getting older. Moreover, with around 70% of the EU population living in cities, Europe has developed into a more or less urban society. Winner ‘Access City Award’ 2023
This European Accessibility Award was launched in 2010 to remind cities of the importance of being accessible to all. Skellefteå from Sweden has won the European Accessibility Award 2023. For example, in Skellefteå;
playgrounds, parks and streets are accessible and can be used by anyone without any problems. Blind people receive information about dangerous points on the street via their mobile phone, so that they can walk safely on the street. The buses have ramps, so that people in wheelchairs can get on the bus without any problems. On the buses there are voice prompts so that blind people can hear useful information about their journey. There are also screens so that people who cannot or have a hearing impairment can read information from the screen. The city provides courses for young people with an intellectual disability. In this they learn how to use technology and live independently.
