New License Plates, Liverpool FC’s Arrival in the Baar, and Police Confiscated Drugs: A Weekly Review for Southern Baden

Why there will soon be new license plates, how Liverpool FC arrives at the Baar and what the police do with confiscated drugs – a lot of explosives in the weekly review for southern Baden.

Hello and salli! Anita Westrup is here! I’m a reporter and editor at the SWR Studio in Freiburg and in the next few lines I’ll take a look at what’s been going on in our region this week:

It was a large-scale operation with drug detection dogs and dozens of emergency services: On Tuesday, the Rottweil criminal police searched more than 15 apartments in the Schwarzwald-Baar, Tuttlingen, Böblingen and Constance districts. The people involved are suspected of selling drugs and doping substances. The list of confiscated items is long, including banned knives, batons and blank guns. Bags of marijuana, bags of coke and amphetamines were also discovered – worth more than 65,000 euros. Not the first find of this kind.

Again and again, officers come across large quantities of drugs, often hashish and marijuana, during house searches. In police jargon it is then said that the intoxicants are “secured”. What exactly does that mean? What happens to the drugs? A call to Marcel Ferraro. He works as a spokesman at the police headquarters in Constance. “Narcotics are only temporarily stored in the regional praesidia,” explains Ferraro. “Special couriers” would pick up the substances immediately after they were confiscated and bring them to the State Criminal Police Office in Stuttgart. There, the substances would first be lifted – as long as they are evidence in criminal proceedings. After that they would be destroyed, often burned.

This brings back memories of “Operation Snowmelt”. Two years ago, the Bavarian police had around 1.5 tons of cocaine destroyed in a waste incineration plant at a secret location in Upper Bavaria. The drugs had a sales value of around 270 million euros! Incomprehensible!

SWR4 Baden-Württemberg reported on the searches by the Rottweil criminal police from the Freiburg studio on July 19, 2023.

Some images just stick in your head: For example, the brief snapshot of Jürgen Klopp this week. The top trainer on a lonely dirt road – somewhere on the Baar – with a slightly crooked bicycle helmet and a wild beard. What on earth is he doing here? Oh, yes, of course: training camp with his boys from Liverpool FC. The football world elite practically on the doorstep. Near to reach? Nearly. There is no public training, no autograph session, no spectators allowed at the friendly game against SpVgg Greuther Fürth on Monday (July 24, 1 p.m.) in the MS Technologie Arena in Villingen. Foreclosure instead of contact.

“It’s a shame,” says Thomas Barth, head of the Villingen police station. He is responsible for the safety precautions in the game against the shamrocks. According to Barth, the stadium and the parking lot will be cordoned off over a large area. No getting through for fans. In addition, meter-high privacy screens around the arena. Even the arrival of Liverpool will be shielded. With a black tarp. The irony is that the words “You’ll never walk alone” are emblazoned on the red Liverpool bus. This magical cohesion between fans and club? Probably still in the summer break!

SWR television reported on Liverpool FC in the Black Forest in the state show on July 19, 2023.

Cars are not just cars. The tin boxes can really grow on you. The more personalized, the better. Here a wobbly Elvis on the dashboard, there a large SC sticker on the rear window and the car seat covers in a smart leopard pattern should not be missing. The pinnacle of personalization: your own personal number plate! Good news for all individualists: If you want to stand out from the driving “FR” standard crowd in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district in the future, you can get a “MÜL” for Müllheim or a “NEU” for Neustadt. The new old license plates will be available from September 29th. With the merger of the districts in 1973, the license plates were abolished. Last year, however, the district council decided that they should be reintroduced. All motorists in the district can apply for license plates. A decent tip for the Bayern stars Thomas Müller and Manuel Neuer: how about a second home in the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald? Customized signs like “MÜL:LER” and “NEU:ER” are not on every street corner – that much is certain.

Incidentally, the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald will not be the only district with driving old license plates. In the Waldshut district, the motto has been “SÄK is back” for more than two years. The nostalgia license plate “SÄK” for Bad Säckingen has brought joy to many a self-proclaimed “SÄK:EL”.

License plate SÄK is backSome drive around as ES EL, in Bad Säckingen they are happy to be a SÄK EL again. What were your old number plates?Posted by Landesschau Baden-Württemberg on Monday, March 22, 2021

In the Ortenau, too, there are always discussions as to whether the former license plates of the former districts should be allowed again in the area of today’s Ortenaukreis, i.e. “BH” (Bühl), “LR” (Lahr), “KEL” (Kehl) or “WOL” (Wolfach). But there is still agreement and acceptance. Surprising. Because the license plate “OG” should for OrtenauKrice, you look in vain for the “G” in the district of Ortenau. Insiders rather speak of the notorious OrtenauGrice. That would be more conclusive, but anything but “SÄK:SY”.

SWR4 reported regionally from the Freiburg studio on July 18, 2023 about the new license plates in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district.
