Tony Bennett was born Anthony Dominick Benedetto on August 3, 1926 in Queens, New York. To support his family financially, he started working as a “singing waiter” in Italian restaurants in his early years, until he had to join the army at the age of 18. After World War II, he picked up his passion again and sang in a military band under the stage name Joe Bari.
His big break came when American comedian Bob Hope heard him sing in 1949. Hope invited him to appear on his show, but advised that he change his name. In the following years, Bennett scored many hits, such as “Cold, cold heart” and “I left my heart in San Francisco”.
