Dubai | Inspectors from the Ministry of Economy, which monitors supermarkets and grocery stores in the UAE, found 125 retailers in violation of the law by raising the prices of essential goods. They increased the prices of grocery items like chicken and eggs despite the government’s price cap to protect consumers.
Meanwhile, 95 percent of supermarkets, retailers and grocers in the UAE have not increased the prices of eggs and poultry.
The Supreme Committee for Consumer Protection said inspectors had carried out more than 209 inspections of retailers and stores, with more planned in the coming weeks.
Essential commodities including cooking oil, eggs, dairy products, rice, sugar, poultry, pulses, bread and wheat will have to comply with the April price control order. Violators will be fined between Dh10,000 and Dh200,000, the ministry said.
In March, the ministry had approved a 13 percent price hike for egg and poultry products and varieties supplied by nine producers in the UAE.
