The Florida Department of Education is under fire after passing new rules on teaching the history of slavery in public schools.
The debate over teaching the history of slavery, African Americans and racial segregation has been reignited in Florida after the publication of a 200 page documentwhich details new guidelines on the subject.
If the instructions include passages on how blacks have positively influenced the United States, the Florida Department of Education, a state governed by Republican Ron DeSantis, has been heavily criticized for other excerpts considered by the main teachers’ union to be “a great leap backwards“.
“More difficult subjects”
Among them, a sentence asking to show “how slaves developed their skills which, in a way, could be applied for their personal benefit“has particularly caught the attention. The document also asks to explain how the violence during certain periods was carried out”against and by African Americans“.
