Conservative stronghold Uxbridge and West Ruislip by-election results: Tories secure seat with emergency strike

The former prime minister resigned from Parliament last month and the Labor candidate was favorite to take the seat.

But the tally last night after the by-election in the Conservative stronghold of Uxbridge and West Ruislip in West London showed that the advance tips did not work.

Boris Johnson resigned from parliament in May after strong criticism for, among other things, violating the corona restrictions.

Tory Steve Tuckwell managed to secure the seat for his party with an emergency strike. He received 495 more votes than Labor candidate Danny Beales.

Saved by toll opposition

Labor has long sought to capture Uxbridge.

The party’s business policy spokesman, Jonathan Reynords, says the rules for zero emissions and tolls have made it difficult for the party to win the constituency.

The tariffs and restrictions on driving with fossil fuel cars have recently been tightened by Labor mayor Sadiq Khan, a decision that has met with great opposition.

Liberal victory in the South West

It did not go as well for the Tories in the by-election in the Somerton and Frome constituency in South West England.

There, candidate Sarah Dyke from the Liberal Democrats won an overwhelming victory with a margin of 11,000 votes.

She has thereby won the seat from the Conservative Party, which in 2019 had a majority of over 19,000 votes in the constituency.

Tactical tuning

– The Tories can be beaten with tactical voting, she says according to the report BBC after the victory was clear.

She thanked voters from Labor and The Green Party for “lending” her their votes.

– There is no doubt that our electoral system is broken, but you have shown me that the Conservatives can still be beaten, Dyke said from the podium.

Liberal Party leader Sir Ed Davey tells the BBC that the victory is “stunning”:

– People in Somerton and Frome have clearly told the rest of the country that they are fed up with Rishi Sunak’s unrealistic Conservative government, he says.

Labour vant i Yorkshire

In the constituency of Selby and Ainsty in North Yorkshire, Labor has won by a margin of 4,161.

The constituency became vacant after Conservative Nigel Adams announced his resignation from Parliament in May. He is known as one of Boris Johnson’s supporters.

Labour’s Keir Mather received 16,456 votes, while Conservative candidate Claire Holmes received 12,298. The Liberal candidate received 1,188 votes.

When the Conservatives won last time, they did so by a margin of over 20,000 votes.

Labour’s victory is the biggest swing from one election to another in the constituency ever, according to the BBC.

At 25, Keir Mather becomes the youngest representative in the British House of Commons.
