It’s different with stab wounds in the abdomen or chest area, he says. ‘That’s where the vital organs such as the heart, lungs and intestines are located. The victim really needs to be operated on for that within a few hours.’ Usually, the patient goes straight from the emergency department to the operating room, but when the heart has been touched, it has to go even faster, says De Voeght. “Sometimes we don’t even make it to the operating room. Then we have to open the patient in the ER to provisionally stitch the heart. Only then can the victim proceed to the OR to complete the operation in a sterile environment.’
