The classic Call of Duty game has seen a surprising resurgence, taking several titles on Xbox’s pay-to-play list. Popular titles such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Black Ops 2, Black Ops and Modern Warfare 3 have outperformed their new releases and are performing exceptionally well in terms of sales.
These older Call of Duty games outsold bigger titles like Red Dead Redemption 2, Hogwarts Legacy, Elden Ring, and even last year’s Modern Warfare 2. This unexpected resurgence sparked renewed interest in the golden age of Call of Duty.
One of the major factors contributing to this rise in popularity is the apparent improvement in matchmaking that Microsoft has made. Reportedly, tens of thousands of players went online to play the classic game over the weekend after news of the server maintenance spread to the community.
However, it’s worth noting that these lobbies can still have hackers, boosters, and cheaters compromising the overall gaming experience. How Microsoft addresses these issues remains to be seen.
In addition to matchmaking improvements, Microsoft has also introduced comprehensive sales that include these classic Call of Duty titles. Neither Microsoft nor Activision have officially commented on the situation, but there is speculation that both companies are preparing to release Call of Duty back catalogs on Game Pass.
Microsoft’s $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard is almost complete. Activision has been hesitant to include Call of Duty on Microsoft’s subscription service, but that may change. Blizzard, a subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, recently announced plans to bring some games to Steam for the first time.
Meanwhile, thousands of players are returning to the classic Call of Duty game, and the in-game player counter shows over 100,000 concurrent top players. While these numbers aren’t completely accurate, it’s clear that the Call of Duty community’s popularity is skyrocketing right now.
Overall, the revival of classic Call of Duty games on Xbox’s list of top paid games is a testament to the franchise’s enduring appeal. Despite the release of new titles, players continue to gravitate toward this beloved classic. It remains to be seen how Microsoft and Activision capitalize on this new interest in the future.
