Bruno Fernandes Named New Captain of Manchester United: Replacing Harry Maguire

Jakarta

Bruno Fernandes officially announced as the new captain of Manchester United. He was promoted to replace Harry Maguire who was removed from office last weekend.

“Bruno Fernandes has been appointed as the new captain of Manchester United. The Portuguese midfielder has worn the captain’s armband on a number of occasions and Erik ten Hag has confirmed that he will lead the team on a permanent basis,” a club statement read.

This announcement is not surprising, because since last season Fernandes has acted as ‘captain on the field’, considering that Maguire is more often benched by Erik ten Hag. Fernandes has led MU in 42 of 59 appearances, including in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup finals.

This decision aims to reinforce his status as captain of the Red Devils, no longer a substitute for someone else who is absent on the field. A natural thing, considering that Fernandes has become the top choice since coming to Old Trafford in January 2020.

Fernandes is also relatively fit and rarely injured. He has appeared 185 times in all competitions with MU in the last three and a half seasons. In that time, no player in the current MU squad has made the same number of appearances.

Fernandes is still under contract with MU until 30 June 2026.
