NBA Summer League 2024: Second Most Viewed Edition in History

The NBA shoots its audience in summer. The National Basketball Association Summer League (NBA Summer League) has closed the 2024 edition becoming the second most viewed in historyas the NBA has revealed on its social networks.

The debut of the French player Victor Wembanyama, a member of the San Antonio Spurs, on July 7 against the Charlotte Hornets was the second most watched game in the history of the summer league, with 1.4 million viewers.

Zion Williamson’s first appearance with the New Orleans Pelicans in the summer of 2019 against the New York Knicks still holds the all-time record, recording 1.6 million viewers. In aggregate, the 2023 edition (held in August 2022) captured 17.9 million viewers.

This year’s NBA Summer League comprised 75 games, and as many as nine in one day, with all the franchises on the court. The opening game faced Oklahoma City and the Philadelphia 76ers. The NBA Summer League is a competition held every July in which the franchises of the tournament participate with squads made up of players with less than three years of experience, the players chosen in the draft and guest players.

The audience data for the NBA Summer League contrasts with that of the last edition of the All-Star Game, which fell to all-time lows. The match that was held on February 20 in Salt Lake City and that faced the teams led by LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo was the NBA All-Star Game with the smallest audience in history.

The 2023 all-star match averaged 4.6 million viewers, 27% less than the previous year’s edition and 22% less than the 2021 match, considered, until then, the NBA All-Star Game with the least following in history, with 5.9 million viewers.

With respect to the 2022 NBA finals, returned to pre-pandemic levels reaching an average of 12.4 million viewers per game, which represents an increase of 22% compared to the figures of the previous year. The meeting faced Golden State Warriors and Boston Celtics.

The victory of the Golden State Warriors in the sixth and final game of the series against the Boston Celtics was followed by 14 million viewers, 11% more than the previous year. In its golden minute, the duel brought together 16.8 million viewers.
