Four patients infected with anthrax in Tuva, a region in southern Siberia in Russia, have escaped from the hospital where they were treated, according to the regional health ministry.

– Four patients admitted with anthrax refused treatment at the regional hospital for infectious diseases and left a medical facility without permission. One patient continues to receive treatment, the ministry says in a press release.
According to Russia’s state news agency Tass, citing public health authorities, the escaped patients are in satisfactory condition, but that they cannot be discharged until after all signs of the disease on the skin, such as wounds or lesions, have healed.
Infected horse
In rare cases, person-to-person transmission of cutaneous (skin. ed. note) anthrax has been reported, where secretions from skin lesions can be contagious, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Humans can become infected with anthrax if they come into contact with infected animals or contaminated animal products, and anthrax can cause serious illness in both humans and animals.
In early July, four residents of the Tuva region, which borders Mongolia, were diagnosed with anthrax after eating the meat of an infected horse. A fifth case was confirmed several days later. Over 150 people have been vaccinated against the contagious disease since then.
More symptoms
According to the CDC, people become infected with anthrax when “spores” enter the body. The spores can be activated and become anthrax bacteria, multiply, spread in the body, produce harmful toxins and cause serious illness.
Working with infected animals or animal products such as wool, hides or hair, and eating raw or undercooked meat from infected animals, can increase the chances of getting anthrax.
Symptoms of anthrax can take anywhere from a day to over two months to appear and include fever and chills, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, confusion or dizziness, cough, nausea, stomach pain, headache, sweating, extreme fatigue and body aches.
If left untreated, the disease can spread throughout the body and cause serious illness and even death.
