Lioness on the Loose: Berlin Police Launch Operation to Recover Escaped Predator in Suburbs

Berlin police on Thursday launched an operation to recover the tracks of a large predator, possibly a lioness, that escaped into the wild in the suburbs of the German capital, while urging citizens to stay at home and make sure that pets do not leave their homes either.

Local police are working with veterinary services and hunting organizations to hunt down the animal, a police spokesman told the press on Thursday.

“We don’t know where it came from,” the official admitted.

Neither zoos and animal parks nor animal welfare agencies in the region have reported a missing lion, he added.

The police believe that the animal could be located on the outskirts of Berlin in the region of Teltow, Kleinmachnow or Stansdorf in the state of Brandenburg.

A witness alerted police to a big cat in the wild after filming it from his car.

Some eyewitnesses claim to have filmed a predator chasing a wild boar and killing it.

Helicopters and flying robots are involved in the search operation for the predator in Kleinmahnow and the nearby region, the police confirmed to the news agency DPA.
