Murcia’s Vaccination Program for 2023: Managing 14,200 Doses of Herpes Zoster Vaccine Adjuvanted with AS01B

Murcia will manage 14,200 doses of vaccine against the Herpes zoster virus adjuvanted with AS01B within the Vaccination Program of the Region for 2023. For this, the Government Council of Murcia, at the proposal of the Ministry of Health, has consigned a total budget of 1.775.852 euros and the execution period until December 31, 2023.

The vaccine will be used in the prevention of herpes zoster and postherpetic neuralgia in adults from the age of 50as well as in adults from the age of 18 with a higher risk to suffer it

In 2023, immunocompromised patients belonging to certain groups will be vaccinated, as well as healthy people from the 65-year-old cohort, and in subsequent years immunization will be extended to other cohorts

The disease of herpes zoster (HZ) presents a low mortalitybut its complications constitute an important public health problem, since they represent a increase in health spending, both direct and indirect. Thus, it implies an increase in health care and pharmaceutical spending and a loss of productivity in the youngest and a need for care in the elderly, while affect directly to the quality of life.

The vaccination supposes a reduction of this disease due to its high effectivenesswhich reaches 70 percent in people aged 65 years after the second dose and 64 percent in immunocompromised patients with certain pathologies.

For vaccination to be effective, it must be articulated within the framework of a Vaccination Program and include your Calendar. Thus, in the Region of Murcia, this vaccine was introduced in March 2022 to people in certain risk groups, according to the presentation of the 2021 Vaccination Program and Registry, later approved by the Public Health Commission.

It was also recommended to incorporate systematic vaccination against HZ in the general population in the 65-year-old cohort depending on dose availability. For this reason, in February 2023, the Ministry of Health incorporated it into the Vaccination Calendar for adults in the cohort of those born in 1958 for the regional population in 2023, and progress will be made in successive years.

Since in Spain only one vaccine is marketed against the Herpes zoster virus adjuvanted with AS01B, its acquisition will be carried out by an exclusivity procedure.
