Jakarta –
Government Russia said that its military had started joint Navy drills with China in the Sea of Japan. The joint military exercise comes as the two allies seek to increase their military cooperation.
Relations between Moscow and Beijing have grown closer since Russia launched its attack on Ukraine last year, a move that was not condemned by China.
Reported by the news agency AFP, Thursday (20/7/2023), the Russian Ministry of Defense said the main objective of the exercise was to “strengthen naval cooperation” between the two countries and “maintain stability and peace in the Asia-Pacific region”. The war games will last until Sunday (23/7).
The Ministry of Defense said the drills would include “anti-submarine and naval combat missions as well as sea and air escort”. The ministry added there were also plans “to conduct joint artillery fire”.
The Russian Navy is represented by two anti-submarine vessels, two corvettes as well as auxiliary ships, the ministry said.
Earlier on Sunday, Beijing said it was sending five warships, including a guided missile destroyer.
More than 30 naval aircraft were involved in the exercises from both sides, including anti-submarine aircraft, helicopters and interceptors, the Russian ministry said.
China and Russia previously conducted joint air patrols over the Japan and East China Seas last month. The exercise prompted South Korea to deploy its fighter jets as a precaution.
It was the sixth Sino-Russian air patrol in the region since 2019.
